About Artist
Duygu Atalay Onur is an Associate Professor and Head of the Textile and Fashion Design Department at Istanbul Beykent University. She works at the intersection of sustainable fashion, circular design, and the contemporary re-reading of craft culture through interdisciplinary methods. Her research and creative practice focus on how traditional making knowledge, particularly marbling (ebru) and needle-lace heritage, can be recontextualised within fashion design, visual storytelling, and emerging technologies, with a strong emphasis on cultural sustainability and socially engaged design.
Her approach is practice-based and research-led, combining design experimentation, participatory workshop formats, and field collaborations to generate both scholarly outputs and artistic works. She has developed projects that explore material literacy, iterative prototyping, and design education for circular futures, while also engaging with questions of authorship, craft labour, and value-making in contemporary creative economies. In recent work, she investigates human–AI collaboration as a creative interface, integrating generative systems such as Leonardo AI into craft-informed processes to examine digital layering, curation, and the metamorphosis of form across physical and computational domains.
Her artistic series Across Strata is conceptually informed by Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari’s notion of strata and becoming, translating these ideas into visual compositions that merge marbling, digital collage, and AI-generated imagery. Across Strata-1 was exhibited in 2025 via the Capitartx platform, with a multi-centred exhibition trajectory spanning London, Dubai, and Istanbul. Across Strata-2 extends the same philosophical framework through a new body of 12 works, deepening the dialogue between craft, technology, and continuous transformation.
Alongside her academic leadership, she continues to develop publications, exhibitions, and collaborative projects that connect design education, cultural heritage, and sustainable innovation.
About Exhibition
Across Strata-2 continues the conceptual framework of the first exhibition, grounded in Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari’s notion of “strata,” and follows Across Strata-1, which was exhibited in 2025 through the Capitartx platform across London, Dubai, and Istanbul. While the philosophical backbone remains intact, the production language expands through 12 new works. Here, “strata” refers not merely to layered surfaces but to a dynamic system in which material, body, technology, desire, and culture continuously reconfigure form. By bringing together the fluid, chance-driven traces of marbling, the probabilistic image-making of AI, and the constructed logic of digital collage within a single visual field, the works render becoming visible. Form is not stabilized but repeatedly stratified, loosened, and reassembled at each stage. In this sense, Across Strata-2 is not a concluding display but a new cross-section of an ongoing process of transformation.
